Heritage Weekend
Bundoran’s Annual Heritage Week returns August 21st to 27th at various locations across Bundoran.
It’s a packed few days and here’s the schedule:
***Donegal & The Great War Exhibition (Fri Aug 21st – Sun Aug 23rd – Eclipse Cinema Lobby)***
An exhibition of photographs and artefacts from Donegal and Bundoran’s involvement in the Great War. Admission Free.
***Donegal Railway Exhibition (Fri Aug 21st & Sat Aug 22nd – Unit 1 Bundoran Retail Park)***
The Bundoran Express and Great Northern Railway are revisited in Bundoran this August 21st – 22nd as part of the Bundoran Heritage Weekend 2014. The Donegal Railway: Model Exhibition’, courtesy of the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre, is a massive model railway exhibition which will take place for 2 days (Friday and Saturday) at unit 1 of Bundoran Retail Park. Up to nine model railway sets will be on display including a ride on model for kids. This extensive exhibition will feature vintage model sets such as the ‘Hornby Tinplate Electrical & Clockwork’ the LGB 45mm Gauge and Donegal Models to name but a few. ***Annual Fr Paddy Gallagher Lecture (Fri Aug 21st 7pm – Bundoran Community Library)***
Two Traditions, One Song – The Music of Loyalism and Republicanism.
This event, hosted by the Magh Éne Historical Society focuses on the music of both traditions in Ulster. Speakers include writer and journalist Darach MacDonald, columnist, loyalist historian Quincey Dougan, Rory Corbett, musicologist and music lecturer and historian Marc Geagan. Admission Free.
***Geological Walk (Sat Aug 22nd 10.00am – West End Pool (Nun’s Pool))***
Local geologist Mick Travers is your guide through the fascinating geology that forms the Bundoran coastline.

From the first settlers to the last arrivals, historian Marc Geagan invokes 5,000 years of Magh Éne’s, often turbulent history on this trail through Ireland’s premier seaside resort. Free of charge.
***Official Opening of Donegal & The Great War Exhibition (Sat Aug 22nd 4pm – Eclipse Cinema)***
Tommy Graham of Newstalk and History Ireland will open this exhibition.
***History Ireland Hedge School (Sat Aug 22nd 8pm – Atlantic Apartotel)***
Tommy Graham (Newstalk and editor of History Ireland) returns to beautiful Bundoran to host a lively Hedge School discussion on the partition of Ireland. Panelists include include writer and journalist Darach MacDonald, columnist, loyalist historian Quincey Dougan and music lecturer and historian Marc Geagan. Admission Free.

***Powering the Nation – The Erne Hydroelectric Scheme (Wed Aug 26th 7pm – Bundoran Community Library)***
Local historian and author Brian Drummond leads us through the historical, political and economic impact of the planning and construction of the Erne Hydroelectric scheme. Admission Free.

***Bundoran & The Great War Lecture with Col. Declan O’Carroll (Thu Aug 27th 6.30pm – Eclipse Cinema)***
Col. Declan O’Carroll (retired) is a native of Bundoran but resident in Letterkenny since 1972.
He served in the Defence Forces for 42 years retiring in 2005.
He joined the Army as a Cadet in 1963 and upon commissioning in 1965 he was posted to Custume Barracks, Athlone. At the outbreak of the troubles in Northern Ireland he was moved to Donegal and served in a variety of appointments in 24 Inf Bn FCA and 28 Inf Bn.
Moving to Defence Forces HQ in Dublin on promotion to Lt.Col. he was appointed Director of Public Relations. In 1998 he returned to Donegal as Officer Commanding 28 Inf Bn in Finner Camp (1998-2001).
On promotion to Colonel in 2001 he became Director of Administration at Defence Force Headquarters in Dublin.
He served a total of nine years abroad in a variety of UN/Nato PfP missions in such as South Lebanon, Cyprus, Beirut, Israel, Golan Heights, Damascus and Croatia.
His final overseas appointment was as the military chief of the Irish office at the Partnership for Peace programme at NATO HQ. in Brussels from 2002-2005.
He retired in the rank of Col. In July 2005.
Col. O’Carroll played gaelic football for Donegal (1961-1974) and was a member of the first team to win the Ulster Senior Championship in 1972.He holds two Railway Cup medals for Ulster.
An enthusiastic local historian he has written and published the histories of Finner Camp, Fort Dunree, Rockhill House, The battle of Scarrifollis 1650 and biographies of Lt Col James McMonagle, Capt. Henry Gallaugher and Supt. Joe Murray.
He recently scripted “The Centenary Years – a history of Letterkenny Golf Club(1913-2012)”.
He is a past President of the Co.Donegal Historical Society
