Details of Bundoran Heritage Weekend announced
With National Heritage Week fast approaching, details of the Bundoran Heritage Weekend which takes place from August 22nd to 24th and is run in association with Discover Bundoran and the Magh Ene Historical Society have been announced.
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, this year’s heritage weekend will once again celebrate Bundoran’s railway heritage as well as World War 1 and 100 Years of Bundoran Town Council.
The weekend will start on Friday 22nd August at Bundoran Community Library – On the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War Magh Éne Historical Society will host a talk on WWI and present a Roll of Honour remembering those from Bundoran who died during the conflict. The Launch night will conclude with a traditional music session in Georges Bar.
On Saturday 23rd, as part of the 100 Years of Democracy exhibition which celebrates the centenary of Bundoran Town Council, a time capsule will be sealed for 25 years and put on display in the Bundoran Library. It will contain items relevant to the Bundoran of 2014 including newspapers, magazines, local items and also two photoboks which have been compiled by the Northwest Photographic Club who have been documenting the town and its people over the past number of months. The ceremony will take place at midday.
The Donegal Railway makes a welcome return to this year’s festival as a massive model railway exhibition which will take place for 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) at unit 2 of Bundoran Retail park. Up to nine model railway sets will be on display including a ride on model for kids. This extensive exhibition will feature vintage model sets such as the ‘Hornby Tinplate Electrical & Clockwork’ the LGB 45mm Gauge and Donegal Models to name but a few.
In keeping with the 100 Years of Democracy theme, “An Evening with the Chairpersons” panel discussion will take place on Saturday evening (23rd) hosted by Daniel Browne of Ocean FM with a panel of Cllr Sean McEniff, Denise Connolly, Florence Hutchinson Travers and Michael McMahon – all of whom have been chair of Bundoran Town Council. The evening will be a nostalgic look back on the history of the council and will take place at Unit 2 of Bundoran Retail Park.
On Sunday the Railway exhibition continues and there’s also a chance to experience some of Bundoran’s history with a historical trail walk through town by some members of the Magh Ene Historical Society – Meeting at unit 2 of Bundoran Retail Park at 2pm.
