Adding to an already impressive line-up of music acts, Sea Sessions have just announced details of their beach sports programme including the Quiksilver Expression Session and DC Skate Jam. Now in its eight year the Quiksilver Expression Session forms an integral part of Sea Sessions and sees some of the best free surfers in Europe compete for Ireland’s top cash prize. After years of French, Australian and English surfers winning the event last year saw Ireland’s Geroid McDaid establish himself on the international scene with a big win. Geroid is about to embark on the European Junior circuit and stated “We know that we have some of the best surf in the world and the fact that top surfers like Liam Turner from the UK or Simon Pegg from as far as New Zealand want to compete is testament to that. I just can’t wait to show them what us Irish boys can do.” Other competitors include, Seb Smart and Rhys Barfield from the UK, Pedro Correja from Portugal and local guys such as Aaron Reid, Conor Maguire and Steven Kilfeder.
Sea Sessions will also host the DC Skate Jam which will see DC bring their European team to skate with the top Irish Skaters such as Gav Gonlaghan (Dublin), Dee Collins (Derry) and Joe Hill (Cork). The Skate ramp is right in the middle of the festival arena and with the top European riders in action is a real crowd pleaser. Niall Hasset head of Quicksilver/DC Ireland said “We had an amazing few days at Sea Sessions last year we’re glad to be back. The DC Skate ramp and the surf comp’ were two high points for me. We had some serious skaters and surfers mingling with the nicest festival crowd in Ireland.” Of course Sea Sessions has lots of other sports events with the Barefoot Wine Beach Soccer, Beach Tag Rugby and Beach Volleyball offering the average festival goer lots of craic on the beach.
For music fans, artists heading northwest this year include Seasick Steve, Example & DJ Wire, Maverick Sabre, Sigma, The Riptide Movement, Black Grape, Interskalactic, Little Hours, Le Galaxie, Klingande, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Jape, Krystal Klear, The Minutes and Kormacs Big Band to name but a few.
